Roller compaction is a dry granulation technique used to improve the flow properties of pharmaceutical materials when direct tablet compression is not feasible. It is often preferred to wet granulation due to its shorter processing time, lower energy consumption, and suitability for heat- and moisture-sensitive compounds. During roller compaction, powder is compressed into ribbons, whose porosity is a critical quality attribute as it has a significant impact on the properties of the resulting granules and tablets.
Accurate measurement of ribbon porosity is essential for validating models and simulations of the roller compaction process, as well as for ensuring successful process transfer and scale-up. Several techniques are currently available for measuring ribbon porosity, each presenting specific advantages and limitations. However, there is a continued need for innovative measurement techniques that are simple, rapid, non-destructive, precise, and accurate.
In this study, laser triangulation was compared with commonly used techniques to evaluate its suitability as an at-line measurement method for ribbon porosity. Its robustness was also assessed to evaluate the reliability and consistency of the measurements. The results demonstrate that laser triangulation is a reliable technique, offering several advantages, including a sample requirement of less than one gram, rapid measurement, and non-destructive analysis.
