Excipients play a critical role in tablet manufacturing, contributing to both formulation performance and process efficiency. Among them, lubricants and anti-adherents serve distinct functions, though these roles are often mistakenly conflated—potentially leading to formulation challenges.
Recent findings demonstrate that internally added hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) significantly reduces ejection force, confirming its effectiveness as a lubricant. However, the same data indicate that HVO increases the tendency for punch sticking, suggesting it does not serve as an anti-adherent.
These observations highlight the importance of accurately defining excipient functionality. A clear understanding of each excipient's role is essential for informed formulation design and robust manufacturing outcomes.
