Predicting the tabletability—defined as the relationship between tensile strength and compaction pressure—of powder mixtures based on the tabletability of pure components can significantly streamline the tablet formulation process, saving both time and resources. This approach represents a major advancement toward fully digital tablet formulation design. The recently proposed Vreeman-Sun tabletability equation provides a mathematical framework to describe tabletability using three key parameters:
alpha, beta and sigma max. Consequently, predicting tabletability becomes a matter of estimating these three parameters for a given mixture. In this study, we present a strategy to predict the tabletability parameters of mixtures from those of the individual constituents using a suitable mixing rule. Testing materials with varied mechanical behaviors, we show that the power-law mixing rule generally provides more accurate predictions than both linear and harmonic mixing rules, closely aligning with experimentally measured tabletability profiles.
