Calcium carbonate as a TiO₂ alternative in tablet coatings
With regulatory pressure increasing against titanium dioxide (TiO₂)—an industry‑standard white pigment and opacifier in tablet film coatings—formulators are exploring viable alternatives for oral solid dosage (OSD) products. Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) has emerged as one of the most promising substitutes due to its ability to deliver visually appealing white coatings when particle engineered for optimal morphology and size distribution, which enhances light scattering and opacity close to TiO₂ levels. Particle‑engineered calcium carbonate excipients such as Parteck® TA demonstrate uniform coating coverage, maintain process efficiency with lower spray viscosity, and preserve tablet galenical properties (hardness, low friability) similar to TiO₂ coatings. Detailed particle engineering and screening methods support formulation development and process optimization, making CaCO₃ a strong option for reformulation as TiO₂ regulatory bans expand.
