Air entrapment during tablet compression – diagnosis and impact on tableting performance assessed with a compaction simulator

The occurrence of air entrapment during tablet compression has the potential to result in noteworthy defects in the tablets. Materials characterized by high plasticity and low bulk density are particularly susceptible to this issue. In such cases, it is crucial to deaerate the powder bed before compression to facilitate the release of trapped air. Identifying air entrapment can be challenging, especially when defects are internal and not readily visible. In addressing this concern, the use of in-die elastic recovery serves as a diagnostic method for detecting issues associated with air entrapment.
