Direct Compression Lactose: Making the right choice
In tablet manufacturing, direct compression (DC) offers a streamlined production route by allowing powders to be blended and compressed into tablets without needing wet or dry granulation. One of the key facilitators of this route is the choice of excipient. Specialized DC lactose grades, such as Armor Pharma’s EXCIPRESS™ GR150 and SD2L, have been developed to optimise both flowability and compaction properties. The GR150 grade combines the high compactibility of fine lactose crystals with the flow advantages of coarser particles and a rough surface for better blending, while SD2L features spherical fine lactose particles embedded in an amorphous lactose matrix, offering very high flow and compaction performance. These lactose excipients make DC more efficient, reduce risk of segregation, improve tablet robustness (hardness & friability), and support high‑quality tablet production in a more cost‑effective manufacturing process.
